Arrondissement) mit einer Fl\u00e4che von 26 Hektar. Die Anlage geh\u00f6rt zum Palais du Luxembourg, in dem der Senat tagt, die zweite Kammer des franz\u00f6sischen Parlamentes.<\/p>\n<p>Der Jardin du Luxembourg ist im Norden begrenzt von dem gleichnamigen Palais, dem kleineren Nebenschloss Petit Palais, das dem Senatspr\u00e4sidenten als Amtssitz dient, der Orangerie und dem Mus\u00e9e du Luxembourg, und im Osten von der \u00c9cole des Mines. Er gliedert sich in zwei Bereiche: Im Umfeld des Schlosses liegen streng geometrische, schon seit Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts auf die klassizistische franz\u00f6sische Gartenkunst hinweisende Blumenbeete und Terrassen, westlich und s\u00fcdwestlich davon die zu einem sp\u00e4teren Zeitpunkt im Stil englischer Landschaftsg\u00e4rten freier gestalteten Bereiche.<\/p>\n<h3>Das Freizeitangebot<\/h3>\n<p>Der Park, der sich besonders bei den Pariser Familien, den Studenten der benachbarten Hochschulen und den Joggern gro\u00dfer Beliebtheit erfreut, bietet mannigfaltige M\u00f6glichkeiten zur Freizeitgestaltung und zur sportlichen Bet\u00e4tigung. Im s\u00fcdwestlichen Bereich \u00e4hnelt er einem Freizeitpark. Hier stehen den kleineren Kindern das in einem festgef\u00fcgten steinernen Miniaturtheater untergebrachte, Guignol genannte Kasperle-Theater, dessen Urspr\u00fcnge auf das Jahr 1881 zur\u00fcckreichen, ein altes, von Charles Garnier entworfenes und von Rilke besungenes Kinderkarussell und Ponys f\u00fcr Reitpartien und Kutschfahrten zur Verf\u00fcgung, den gr\u00f6\u00dferen ein Abenteuerspielplatz. Auch Tennis- und Basketballpl\u00e4tze sind vorhanden, sowie eine Anlage f\u00fcr das Jeu de Paume, einem Spiel mit der Handinnenfl\u00e4che, ein Vorl\u00e4ufer des Tennisspiels. Es gibt einen \u00fcberdachten Schachspiel-Platz, ein Boulodrome[1] und zwei Kaffeeg\u00e4rten. Vor der Gartenfassade des Schlosses befindet sich ein Wasserbecken, in dem traditionell selbstgebastelte oder gemietete Modellboote im Wind segeln. Freiluftkonzerte finden unter einem Musikpavillon beim Haupteingang am Boulevard Saint-Michel statt. Dort werden an der Au\u00dfenseite der Gitter auch regelm\u00e4\u00dfig Foto-Ausstellungen veranstaltet.<\/p>\n<p>In der \u00e4u\u00dfersten s\u00fcdwestlichen Spitze des Gartens befindet sich die \u2013 nach Einschreibung \u2013 jedermann offenstehende Imkerschule und der sorgf\u00e4ltig gehegte Obstgarten mit seinen Spalieren. Die Produkte des dereinst k\u00f6niglichen Gartens werden allj\u00e4hrlich im Herbst in der Orangerie ausgestellt und zum Verkauf angeboten.<\/p>\n<h3>Geschichte<\/h3>\n<p>Der Garten wurde ab dem Jahr 1611 oder 1612 im Auftrag von Maria von Medici, der aus Italien stammenden Witwe des K\u00f6nigs Heinrich IV. f\u00fcr ihr damals weit au\u00dferhalb der Stadtgrenzen entstehendes Landschloss gestaltet. Diesem lagen wenigstens teilweise die Pl\u00e4ne des Palazzo Pitti in Florenz, in dem Maria von Medici aufgewachsen war, zugrunde. Obwohl der S\u00fcdfl\u00fcgel des Palais und der daran anschlie\u00dfende Garten im 19. Jahrhundert starke Ver\u00e4nderungen erfuhren, haben sie sich ein leichtes italienisches Flair bewahrt, das die in K\u00e4sten gepflanzten Palmen unterstreichen.<\/p>\n<p>Der urspr\u00fcngliche Garten wies bereits gro\u00dfe Baumbest\u00e4nde, Blumenrabatten und auch Wasserbecken auf, f\u00fcr deren Speisung zwischen 1613 und 1624 der aus der N\u00e4he von Rungis kommende Aqu\u00e4dukt von Arcueil gebaut wurde. Auch die vor der Gartenfassade um das zentrale Wasserbecken gegen S\u00fcden ausgerichtete hufeisenf\u00f6rmige Rampe mit ihren erh\u00f6hten Terrassen existierte in \u00e4hnlicher Form schon zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts, erhielt ihre Marmorstatuen, darunter das Standbild der K\u00f6nigin Maria von Medici, aber erst im 19. Jahrhundert. Der Park birgt zahlreiche weitere Statuen und Kunstwerke, unter anderem ein Exemplar der Freiheitsstatue von Auguste Bartholdi.<\/p>\n<p>Nachdem der Garten 1617 durch Tausch um einen Teil des eingefriedeten Klostergel\u00e4ndes der Kart\u00e4user vergr\u00f6\u00dfert worden war, lie\u00df Ludwig XIV., Enkel der Maria von Medici, die Hufeisenrampe durch die grandiose Perspektive der Avenue de l\u2019Observatoire erg\u00e4nzen, die den Blick \u00fcber den ehemals hier festgelegten Pariser Null-Meridian bis zum Pariser Observatorium leitet. Bereits im 17. Jahrhundert zog der Park ein breiteres Publikum an. (Sauval vermerkte 1650, er sei \u201ezuweilen \u00f6ffentlich, zuweilen nicht\u201c). Im 18. Jahrhundert war der Garten ein beliebter Promenadenort f\u00fcr Literaten: Hier ergingen sich unter anderem Jean-Jacques Rousseau und Denis Diderot.<\/p>\n<p>Im Lauf der Zeit erfuhr die Gartenfl\u00e4che noch mehrere Ver\u00e4nderungen: 1782 von dem damaligen Besitzer, dem Comte de Provence, dem Bruder Ludwigs XVI. und sp\u00e4teren K\u00f6nig Ludwig XVIII. um sechs Hektar amputiert (um die Restaurierung des Schlosses zu finanzieren), wurde er in der Revolution anl\u00e4sslich der Beschlagnahmung des dem Kart\u00e4userkloster bis dato verbliebenen Besitzes wieder vergr\u00f6\u00dfert, schlie\u00dflich 1865 unter Napol\u00e9on III. und seinem Pr\u00e4fekten Georges-Eug\u00e8ne Haussmann durch den Bau der Rue Auguste Comte und von H\u00e4usern im Osten und S\u00fcden erheblich beschnitten.
